Do you know 5 moms? Then you know someone....
1 in 5 women experience some form of depression, anxiety, panic or post-traumatic stress disorder during the perinatal period (pre/post birth). Sadly, almost 85% of these disorders go untreated due to a lack of awareness and access or from feelings of fear and shame. In honor of Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month we will tackle the topic of postpartum, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and the importance of the mama village support.
Weathering the STORM of hormones that flood our systems during pregnancy and post birth (and when we stop breastfeeding, and when we enter menopause...) is a LOT for our bodies to handle. This is COMMON and we want to remove the stigma around maternal mental health and create a safe space for this discussion for moms and caregivers who want to learn more about this topic, whether you have directly experienced, are experiencing, or stand in solidarity with women and families affected by this issue. We will discuss risk factors and triggers, tools and resources for support and ways to help yourself and your tribe.
On Thursday, May 17, we will hear from Jessica Vanderberg of Mom Town who will share her personal journey and insight, both as a mother of 3 who experienced postpartum anxiety/OCD and also from a professional angle as a postpartum/birth doula. Jessica is also a PMAD early screening advocate and volunteers her time for Postpartum Support International as a HelpLine operator. This fall, she will begin a Masters in Social Work graduate degree with a focus on both maternal mental health and family leave policy development.
We will also hear expert insight and personal anecdotes from Samantha Huggins, co-founder of Carriage House Birth, a CHB certified intuitive birth doula, mother of two little kiddos, lactation counselor, childbirth educator and co-founder of The Code, a radical sex education program for tweens
100% of the proceeds for this event will be donated to the important work by Postpartum Support International.
